Chapter Eight

Demelda

A knock on her door jolted Demelda awake. Rubbing wearily at her eyes, she cleared her throat.

“Come in!” she managed to shout out in her disorientation.

Two maidservants hurried into the bedroom. Noticing that the slave she’d attacked wasn't present, she assumed that she'd asked to be assigned to another member of the royal household. A pang of guilt pulled at her stomach as she spotted the new replacement. Her usual servant flew over to draw open the heavy red drapes, whilst the other rifled through the wardrobe, picking out suitable attire for her.

“Oh, no, that’s quite alright, put the dresses back. I’m seeing my beloved Montry this morning, and I intend to ride him. Please fetch my equestrian attire.”

“Very well.” The servant smiled pleasantly as she rooted around the bottom of the wardrobe in search of her grey breeches, tunic, and cape.

Demelda sat up and let out a huge yawn. A deep cough coming from beside the door made her bolt upright, clasping her hands against her white flowery nightgown.

Slowly, she twisted her head to see who coughed.

There stood Kavic, her new slave, bare-chested, brawny, and gorgeous in his white loincloth, his flowing dark hair tumbling over his chest.

“I am ready to serve you, Your Highness.” He bowed lightly, his gaze firm upon her as a small smile crept onto his face. “I slept very well and by the looks of it, you did, too.”

His smile annoyed her. Could he tell she was attracted to him? That would not do.

With a glare, she glowered, “I must insist that you knock before making your presence known to a princess!”

Throwing back her covers, she swung her legs over the bed and addressed a female servant. “Fetch Kavic some suitable clothing.”

With a mocking tilt of her head, she gave him a sarcastic grin.

The servant scurried from the room, while the other came toward her with an arm full of her favourite riding clothes: white tunic, black breeches, boots, and gloves, with a matching cape that was decorated with gold brocade. Demelda loved how the black contrasted with her blonde hair and light blue eyes.

Rising from the bed, Demelda kept her gaze away from the male servant. Her gown fell about her ankles, making her a little conscious.

In an attempt to hide her discomfort, she cleared her throat. “When she returns, Kavic, I suggest you get changed. Don’t dally, we’ll be leaving for the stables shortly.”

He nodded once, his eyes glinting.

Was he happy here? He certainly smiled a lot considering he was now a slave to a princess.

Not looking at him again, she walked to her carved wooden paravent screen on the other side of the room. Perhaps his life in Vallandria had been far more horrid. Maybe serving her would be a welcome change from tireless labour.

Pushing away the question of his happiness, she moved behind the screen, her servant following to dress her.

She imagined Kavic watching, seeing her silhouette as she lifted her arms high for her servant to slip off her nightgown.
